2020 TA Orientation Programs

Welcome New TA! Congratulations on your appointment as a new Teaching Assistant (TA) at Rutgers University.

The TA Project sponsors online TA orientation programs which you can view at your convenience. The orientation will discuss the issues that you can expect to encounter at Rutgers as a TA, strategies for dealing with common challenges, and tips for making your time at the front of the classroom as effective and rewarding as possible. Our goal is to prepare you to walk into class that first day with confidence.

Newly appointed TAs are required to view New TA Orientation. Additionally, TAs who are non-U.S. citizens are also required to view the International TA Orientation.

Click below for more information.

This orientation consists of a series of recorded short presentations and discussions on general and discipline-specific teaching issues. TAs will receive advice and guidance from experienced TAs, explore a variety of pedagogical methods, and learn about Rutgers undergraduate student culture.

Who should watch?
All new TAs at Rutgers. This includes first year students who will be TAing for the first time as well as returning students who have not yet been a TA but will be TAing for the first time this upcoming year.

When and where is it?
New TA Orientation will be available to view in mid-August on the the Rutgers Canvas platform. All new TAs will be sent a link to the orientation. Please note that you will need to have activated your NetID to view this orientation.

Praise for TAP's orientations!

  • Listening to the TAs talk about their experiences and the tools they develop was a brilliant experience!
  • Open, fun, honest. Loved it!!
  • This session covered any and all concerns I had about being a TA!
  • It was helpful to get ideas about the kinds of situations I might face as a TA and how to deal with them. Most importantly, this program helped me feel more confident about being a TA.
