Dean's Fellowships

As part of our commitment to foster exploration, discovery, and innovation in graduate education, the School of Graduate Studies is pleased to offer annual Dean’s Fellowships to talented incoming students from a wide variety of backgrounds. The objective of these fellowships, previously called Diversity Fellowships, is to broaden participation in graduate study. Based on a broad definition of diversity, these awards should help our graduate programs recruit and retain excellent graduate students across the disciplines.

Process: The streamlined nomination, evaluation, and award process implemented in 2018 will continue for the 2019 admissions cycle. The timeline will be announced the week of January 2 by email to all graduate program directors and graduate administrative assistants.

  • Graduate Program Directors will submit nominations via the Grad Portal during a specified January and February time period.
  • Faculty Evaluators drawn from the humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields will review a subset of candidates in their respective areas and make their recommendations to the School of Graduate Studies Selection Committee. There will be two review periods:
    • Early Action: For nominations submitted by January 30.
    • General Pool: For nominations submitted between the end of the Early Action period and the closing date.
  • The Selection Committee will aggregate the faculty recommendations, determine the overall rankings for the entire applicant pool, and allocate awards.

Eligibility: For School of Graduate Studies (School 16) programs, only first-year PhD applicants are eligible for nomination.

Financial benefits: New awards carry a stipend of $25,000, tuition remission, and Fellow health insurance.
