Merit-Based Financial Support of Ph.D. Students

Most Ph.D. students applying for admission to the programs in the Graduate School–New Brunswick are provided with one to five years of support at the time of an offer of admission. The forms of support include fellowships, teaching assistantships, graduate research assistantships or a combination of these. All of these forms of support include remission of tuition. Teaching and research assistantships also provide remission of student fees and health benefits. To be considered for these forms of support, apply directly to the graduate program of interest.

The Graduate School hosts competitive fellowship opportunities for Ph.D. students:

  • Torrey Fellowships in the science, mathematics, and engineering disciplines. Outstanding candidates are nominated by their program for consideration. Open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

  • Presidential Fellowships in all Ph.D. programs in the School. Exceptional candidates are nominated by their program for consideration.

  • Bevier and University Dissertation Fellowships in all Ph.D. programs. Ph.D. candidates entering their final year of studies are invited to apply. Deadline is February 15. Applications are submitted to the Director of the specific graduate program for consideration by a campus-wide faculty committee.

  • Diversity Fellowships

The Graduate School–New Brunswick also participates in competitive nation-wide training opportunities for Ph.D. students. Open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

Chaser–The Resource Center for Graduate Student External Support helps graduate students apply for opportunities for external funding.

Need-Based Financial Aid

Graduate students in all programs who are U.S. students and permanent residents may apply for grants, loans, and part-time employment by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Need-based aid must be requested by March 15 for the subsequent fall term.
