Alexandra SocaridesAlexandra Socarides’ course will look at a number of American poets, discussing one poem per week, with emphasis on the material side of the making of poetry. For example, the Langston Hughes week will consider one poem and different versions of it, poems that influenced the poet, reviews of the poem, an essay by the poet and critical essays by others, as well as a web link to the magazine in which it was published. Students will be required to make up their own packet of a poem of their choice. The result will be learning to read a poem in the context of its production, circulation and reception. |
