Leonard C. Feldman

Len Feldman received his Ph.D. in Physics in 1967, under the direction of Walter Gibson. He went on to Bell Labs, where he was a department head for many years, and then to Vanderbilt University, where he headed an institute, and came back to Rutgers in 2007, where he heads the Institute for Advanced Materials, Devices and Nanotechnology and is Vice President for Physical Science and Engineering Partnerships.

Dr. Feldman is known as an excellent teacher and mentor, is widely sought after as a collaborator, consultant, editorial board and panel member, and has an international reputation as a scientific leader, both in research and in the management of research. He is among the researchers whose discoveries led to the semiconductor revolution due in part to his work on the interface of silicon and silicon dioxide. He has received many awards and is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is one of the most cited scientists in his field, and we are very pleased that Len Feldman has returned to Rutgers.

In honor of two of its alumni receiving Distinguished Alumni Awards, the Department of Physics and Astronomy will be hosting a symposium, Distinguished Contributions to Applied and Basic Nuclear Physics: The Legacy of the Rutgers-Bell Tandem, on Friday, March 6, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
