Brian Clancy

Brian Clancy’s dissertation is a study of the architecture of American opera houses in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He weaves together architectural history, musicology, and social history to show how opera houses defined urban identity. Central to this is his discussion of the complex place the opera house held between America’s public, civic life and its private culture. Carla Yanni, his adviser, writes that his work is “certain to make a great contribution to the field of architectural history.”
