Kelly D. Brownell![]() Kelly Brownell is Professor of Psychology at Yale and Director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine and was named one of the world’s 100 most influential people by Time Magazine in 2006. He has been president of several important scholarly societies and is one of the most cited people in the field of psychology. He is noted primarily for his efforts, both scholarly and in public affairs, to understand and address the problem of obesity, including having a role in the New York City effort to ban junk food in the schools. His research brings together a broad spectrum of disciplines, extending beyond the psychology of health to basic physiology and to public policy. The mission of the Rudd Center is to improve the world’s diet, to prevent obesity, and to reduce weight stigma by combining science with public policy. Surely one of the university’s most distinguished alumni, he is to be admired not only for his scholarship and his public role, but also for his person and his dedication to helping others. To celebrate his Lifetime Achievement Award, the Department of Psychology is pleased to sponsor a lecture by Dr. Brownell—Do We Have the Courage to Change the American Diet?—on Friday, March 7, at 3:00 p.m. in the Biomedical Engineering Building, Room 102, Busch Campus.
