Frequently Asked Questions (for Word Perfect under Windows 95)

1. Page Numbering

1. Page numbering

  • Page numbers on preliminary pages (starting from title page to the page before Chapter One) should be lower-case Roman numerals, centered ½ inch from the bottom of the page. The page numbers should start from page ii from "Abstract of the Dissertation" section. (Page i should not be printed on the Title page.) Here is how to define the page numbers for preliminary pages:
  1. Set bottom margin to 0.5. Select Format, then Margins. Type 0.5 under the Bottom. Click OK.
  2. Insert page numbering command. From Format, select Page Numbering, then Select. Under Position, choose Bottom Center. Under Page number format, choose the i format. Click OK. You should see a page number displaying at the bottom of your text.
  3. (Optional) Insert a footer to get enough space so that the text will stop printing on the 1" bottom margin. From Format, select Header/Footer. Under Select, click on Footer A, then click create. You should see a box displaying under the top margin line with the page number in the box. (Note: it seems that without doing this step, the text seems to be printed still within the 1" margin range. So it will be up to the printer you will be using to decide where it stops for the last line. Print a test page to see whether you can get a right location for the page number.)
  • Page numbers on main body of text should be Arabic numerals. The number on each page should be on the upper right-hand corner, exactly 1 inch from the right-hand edge of the page and ½ inch from the top. Here is how to set this up:
  1. Set top margin to 0.5. Select Format, then Margins. Type 0.5 under the Top. Click OK.
  2. Insert page numbering command. From Format, select Page Numbering, then Select. Under Position, choose Top Right. Under Page number format: choose the number format. Click OK. You should see a page number displaying on your document on the upper right corner.
  3. Insert a header to get enough space for the main body of text to start with. From Format, select Header/Footer. Under Select, click on Header A, then click create. You should see a box displaying under the top margin line with the page number in the box. Press Enter to give one extra line in the box.
  4. Now you are ready to type your text beneath the header line. When printed, your text will be printed slightly below the 1" line. (Note: Some people might have difficulty getting the text printed below the 1" line. Depending on how your printer works with WordPerfect, you may want to adjust the top margin to 0.6 so that the text will be printed below the 1" line.)
